A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Golden Apple Art Residency is located approximately an hour north of Bar Harbor along the rocky coastal region of Downeast Maine. Within a very quiet and secluded location, the residency grounds are situated near the tip of Ripley’s Neck down a long and winding road outside of Harrington, where the main house, the studios and the residency cottages are all less than two hundred feet from shore. It is in this remote, naturally rugged and picturesque environment that our artists and writers find the support and inspiration to create.

Golden Apple Art Residency offers three sessions during the summer months of July through early September. Five artists are accepted into each two-week session during which lodging, private studio space and all meals are provided. The accommodations at Golden Apple are some of the finest to be had in a residency experience. Painters and drawers, photographers, printmakers, fiber artists, sculptors and writers have all utilized the studio spaces at Golden Apple working productively and successfully to achieve their goals, a direct result of the benefit of time and space without distraction. Each artist is provided a fully-furnished private cottage which includes a comfortable queen-sized bed, kitchenette, separate bath and shower, and a spectacular view of the ocean. The studios are located in the lower floor of the main house, and include separate outdoor entrances with 24-hour access. Each well-lit studio looks out to the ocean and is furnished with a sink and cabinets, desk/tables and chairs, corkboards, rolling taborets, professional easels of your choice, and other furnishings as needed. Internet access is available in both the cottages and studios, and a color laser printer, copier and fax machine are available for use in the studio area. Meals are healthy and delicious. Both breakfast and lunch is provided in the common room near the studios and can be eaten in the studios or outdoors on the patio overlooking the ocean. The communal evening meal is a highlight of every day. Dinner is served in the diningroom of the main house and is often preceded by Happy Hour in the sunroom. Each dinner is carefully and professionally prepared using fresh local fruits, vegetables and seafood, emphasizing regional cuisine. Vegetarian and gluten-free diets can be accommodated. A wine pairing is presented each evening. Dinner table conversation is lively and enjoyable.

Golden Apple provides unique inspiration for photographers and plein air painters. Located in the most eastern point in North America, it provides an opportunity to be the first on the continent to witness the sun rise over the horizon. Evenings provide spectacular sunsets. The residency itself is situated on nearly fifty acres of spruce forest and overlooks the bay where lobster boats chug through the waters early each morning. Nearby scenic areas include Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Schoodic Point and Jasper Beach, as well as many off-the-beaten-path destinations waiting to be discovered.
